AI could potentially help military personnel: analyse large volumes of intelligence; identify potential threats; detect cyber intrusions; assess possible scenarios; assist with logistics and planning. The controversial step is allowing an autonomous system to decide whether lethal force should be used, particularly where the consequences could involve civilians, escalation between nuclear powers, or irreversible destruction. The bigger question The debate is therefore becoming: How much decision-making authority should humans delegate to machines when the consequences of an error could be irreversible?
