A 13-year-old boy from Long Island, New York, is set to take another major step in his education after being accepted into a master’s programme at New York University (NYU). Joe Petraro-Hyppolite has already completed several academic milestones years ahead of the conventional timeline. According to CBS News New York, he scored 1,590 out of 1,600 on the SAT at age 10 and earned his high school diploma at 11. Joe is currently completing his undergraduate degree and is expected to graduate in May 2027. He is then scheduled to begin his master’s programme at NYU. The teenager said he plans to study sports management, with additional academic interests in kinesiology and biology. He acknowledged that the next stage could be challenging but said he was excited about the opportunities ahead. Joe has reported an IQ of 168 and said his academic abilities do not mean that learning comes effortlessly. His unusual academic journey has already taken him to Louisiana State University, where he has studied alongside students considerably older than him. His mother, Anne Petraro-Hyppolite, said the family’s experience has been difficult to describe, particularly because Joe was previously placed in special education classes after being diagnosed with Tourette syndrome. Beyond academics, Joe also volunteers at a nursing home in Long Island. He has said that he eventually hopes to pursue a career in palaeontology. If he completes his master’s programme as planned, Joe would graduate at an age when many teenagers are only beginning to consider university education.
