Woman Accuses Sister of Sending Their Mother Out After Family Dispute

A Nigerian woman has taken to social media to accuse her elder sister of allegedly sending their mother out of her home following a disagreement over their mother’s living arrangements. The woman said the dispute began after their mother, who lives with the elder sister and her husband, allegedly started comparing the two sisters’ husbands whenever she visited her younger daughter. According to her account, their mother would return to the elder sister’s home and complain that her daughter and son-in-law were not caring for her as well as the younger sister and her husband. The younger daughter said the situation reportedly created tension between her mother, sister and brother-in-law. She claimed the matter escalated when her elder sister allegedly told their mother that if she preferred the younger daughter’s care, she should stay with her instead. The woman said her mother subsequently contacted her after allegedly being sent out of the house. However, she explained that she could not accommodate her mother at the time because she and her husband had previously agreed that they would not have anyone live with them permanently. She said she therefore asked their mother to spend the night at a cousin’s home. According to her account, the cousin later said she could not continue accommodating their mother because of limited space. The younger daughter then said she contacted her elder sister and appealed to her to forgive their mother and allow her to return home. She also reportedly contacted her brother-in-law, who allegedly explained that he had no personal problem with his mother-in-law but was uncomfortable with what he described as her repeated comparisons between him and the younger sister’s husband. The woman said she attempted to mediate, arguing that parents sometimes compare their children’s circumstances, particularly when there are differences in financial situations. However, she claimed her brother-in-law maintained that he could not accept such comparisons and asked her to caution their mother. The younger daughter subsequently criticised her sister’s alleged decision to send their mother away and questioned how a daughter could treat her mother in such a manner. She also said she was making arrangements for their mother to move into one of her husband’s apartments located near the mother’s cousin. The account has generated discussion online about family responsibilities, caring for ageing parents, financial comparisons between siblings and the challenges that can arise when elderly parents live with their adult children.
