Alex Otti: Good Governance Is the Most Important Thing a Government Can Give the People

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has said that good governance is the most important thing a government can provide for its people, while reiterating that he does not intend to become a political godfather or impose a successor on the state. Otti made the remarks on Thursday, September 17, 2026, in Umuahia, while receiving former Social Democratic Party governorship candidate Ngozi Johnson-Chukwunenye and her supporters into the Labour Party. “The most important thing you can give a people is good governance.” The governor said he believes citizens who experience what they consider good governance would be reluctant to return to what he described as the “Egypt” of the past. Otti also said he wants his successor to perform better than he has and rejected the idea of becoming a political godfather. “I don’t want to be a godfather. And I don’t tolerate godfathers.” He said the process of choosing the next governor should focus on identifying the person considered most suitable for the job, rather than maintaining a “sit-tight” approach to political leadership. Otti further reiterated that he does not intend to seek another elective position after completing his tenure, saying younger Nigerians should be given opportunities to assume leadership. He pointed to the Abia Leadership Academy, saying more than 1,080 young people aged between 16 and 25 had recently graduated from the programme and were being prepared for future leadership responsibilities. The governor also said his administration would continue its development efforts beyond Aba and Umuahia into other parts of the state.
