Awoniyi Returns to Super Eagles Squad as Osimhen Ruled Out of AFCON Qualifiers

Taiwo Awoniyi has returned to the Super Eagles squad, replacing Victor Osimhen ahead of Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed Awoniyi’s inclusion on Sunday through the official Super Eagles account, announcing that the Coventry City striker would take Osimhen’s place for the two qualifying matches. Osimhen has been ruled out of the upcoming fixtures as he continues his recovery from a muscle strain. His recovery has taken longer than initially expected, according to reports from the Super Eagles camp. Awoniyi, 29, returns to the national team after being away from the Super Eagles setup since 2024. His recall follows his move from Nottingham Forest to Coventry City, where he has begun the new season with a goal and an assist in the Carabao Cup. The striker's return gives coach Éric Chelle another option in attack as Nigeria prepares for the qualifiers. Nigeria will host Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
