FG Gives Two-Week Ultimatum Over Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Safety Breaches

The Federal Government has threatened to shut the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway within two weeks if motorists and other road users fail to comply with safety regulations. The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, issued the warning during an inspection of the highway, citing speeding, vandalism, illegal parking, unauthorised U-turns and other activities along the route. Dare said the directive followed concerns raised by Works Minister David Umahi over persistent safety violations on the highway. The prescribed speed limit is 30km/h, but authorities said some motorists have been driving at speeds of up to 120km/h while construction is still ongoing. The Lagos section covers about 103 kilometres across two sections, with 20 major bridges planned. Several bridges remain under construction, and officials say the road was not originally intended to carry traffic before completion of the bridge works. Authorities also reported significant vandalism, including the removal of approximately 5km of ClearVu fencing and concrete covers along about 18km of the route. The Guardian additionally reported that about 150 directional signs had been removed. The government is increasing police deployment and considering CCTV surveillance.
