Delta Police Probe APC–NDC Rally Clash, Recover AK-47

The Delta State Police Command is investigating a violent incident surrounding an APC–NDC political rally in Uvwie Local Government Area, where officers rescued a man from an alleged mob attack and recovered an AK-47 rifle. Police said they received intelligence on September 15, 2026, about a possible clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Both groups subsequently notified the police of their planned activities on September 17, less than 10 hours before the September 18 rally. According to the police, officers were deployed to the proposed venue at Angle Park in Warri from 5 a.m. to prevent violence. Additional patrol teams were later deployed under Operation Show of Force as tensions increased. At about 11:30 a.m., police officers reportedly saw a group of youths attacking a man identified as Collins Egbara near an old building in the Orumarho community, Effurun. Officers rescued Egbara, who had sustained serious injuries, and took him to hospital. The police said Egbara was unable to make a statement because of his condition and that they had not established whether he was affiliated with either political party. A subsequent search of the building where Egbara was found led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle. Police rejected reports that the weapon had been voluntarily handed over to officers, saying its ownership and circumstances of possession remain under investigation. The incident follows earlier allegations by NDC campaign organisers that their mobilisation march in Effurun was disrupted by suspected political thugs. Police said Egbara remains in protective custody while receiving treatment and that his statement will be obtained when his condition allows.
