Turkey: 15-Year-Old Student Arrested After School Shooting Injures 11

A 15-year-old student has been arrested in Turkey after a shooting outside a high school in the western province of Manisa left at least 11 students injured, with two reportedly in serious condition. The incident occurred at about 8:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, September 22, near the İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Turgutlu district. According to reports, the suspect is a ninth-grade student at the school. Authorities said a hunting rifle was used in the attack. The suspect was subsequently apprehended by security forces. Turkey's Justice Minister, Akın Gürlek, said an investigation had been launched into the shooting. Authorities are examining, among other issues, how the weapon came into the teenager's possession and claim that the student may have experienced bullying. The suspect's parents and grandfather, who reportedly owned the firearm, have also been detained as part of the investigation. Two chief prosecutors have been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. The shooting comes months after two other school shootings in Turkey in April, which prompted authorities to introduce additional security measures around schools.
