Entrepreneur Sophia Momodu has opened up about the ridicule and social stigma she experienced after becoming pregnant outside marriage, saying the situation was particularly difficult because she was a pastor’s daughter. Momodu spoke during a side panel on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, where she reflected on the public scrutiny surrounding her pregnancy and her struggle to find her voice. According to Momodu, becoming pregnant by Afrobeats star Davido attracted significant public attention and mockery. “I am a pastor’s daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock by a global superstar. And I was mocked. It was crazy.” She said that despite being famous, she felt she did not have a voice for a long time because her own story was overshadowed by the negativity surrounding it. Momodu also recalled that an aunt once told her that someone had asked her to remain silent about the experience because it was considered a subject Black women were not expected to discuss publicly. She said speaking about her experience at different forums, including in South Africa, eventually helped her realise that she was not alone.
