“Our Major Opponent Was Atiku, Obi Wasn’t A Threat” – Wike Explains Why His Camp Backed Peter Obi In 2023

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike recently explained the G5 governors’ strategy in the 2023 presidential election.

He said his camp (and the G5 group of PDP governors) deliberately encouraged votes for Labour Party candidate Peter Obi in parts of the South-South so that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar (then the PDP presidential candidate) would be denied votes from the region’s traditional PDP stronghold.

Key points from Wike’s remarks

Atiku was the main threat: “We felt that Atiku was more of a factor in that election than Obi. So our strategy was: make sure that you vote for Obi to win in order to deny Atiku the votes.”

He noted that the South-South was “purely a PDP state,” so a strong PDP (Atiku) performance there could have significantly boosted Atiku’s national standing.

Obi was not seen as a real threat: “Obi wasn’t a threat. Obi was merely a threat by social media.” Wike argued that even if Obi had won Rivers State outright, it would not have changed the overall outcome of the presidential race.

Specific application of the strategy: The group allowed Obi to take votes in places like Edo and Cross River (where PDP was strong) to split the opposition and reduce Atiku’s margin. In Rivers State, however, they actively prevented an Obi win because they believed it would send an unwanted political signal.

Denial of rigging: Wike rejected claims that the strategy amounted to election rigging. He described it as a normal political calculation and noted that no result sheets proving manipulation of the Rivers State results were presented at the election tribunal.
