“I Have No Quarrel With Soludo” — Peter Obi Speaks Amid Anambra Debt Dispute

What happened

Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has denied reports of a personal rift between him and his successor, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, as controversy continues over Anambra State's financial obligations.

Obi made the clarification on September 25, 2026, while speaking at the 22nd Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu. He described Soludo as his “dear elder brother” and said their relationship should not be interpreted through the ongoing political and financial disagreement.

Obi went further by revealing that he and his wife are godparents to Soludo's children, which he cited as evidence of the personal relationship between the two families.

“People might not know. My wife and I are godparents to Soludo’s children. Yes. We are that close. We are not quarrelling. I will never quarrel with him. If I see him any day, he and I will hug.”

Premium Times reported that Obi made the comments while addressing the debt controversy involving his administration and the current Anambra government.

The clarification comes against the backdrop of a dispute over external financing associated with projects implemented during Obi's tenure as governor.

The Anambra Government has said eight external financing facilities connected with projects from the period had a combined contracted value of $123.77 million, with $92.35 million outstanding as of June 30, 2026.

Obi disputes the characterization of the entire $123.77 million as debt inherited from his administration. He has argued that the facilities included World Bank and IFAD development programmes negotiated through the Federal Government and accessed by participating states through subsidiary arrangements.

He has also cited Debt Management Office figures which, according to him, put Anambra's external debt at approximately $30 million in March 2014, when he left office, rather than $123.77 million.

That means the central issue remains how the $123.77 million figure was calculated, how much was actually drawn, when the funds were drawn, and what amount was outstanding when Obi handed over power.

Obi says he will not seek governorship again

Obi also used the occasion to clarify his political intentions concerning the governorship.

He said he is not seeking the governorship of any state and would not seek such an office again, even if the Nigerian Constitution were amended to permit him to do so.

He also appealed to state governors to allow presidential candidates and other political contestants to campaign freely in their states regardless of political affiliation, saying voters should ultimately determine who represents them.

What the records currently establish

There are two separate issues that should not be conflated:

Personal relationship: Obi says he has no quarrel with Soludo and describes their relationship as close.

Financial records: Obi and the Anambra Government disagree over the interpretation and attribution of external financing associated with projects implemented during his administration.

Therefore, the statement “I Have No Quarrel With Soludo” does not mean the two sides agree on Anambra's debt records. The financial dispute remains a separate issue.
