“I Had No Idea I Was Sitting With Peter Obi” — Man Recounts Surprise Encounter on Flight to Owerri

A Nigerian man identified on X as @Zaddy_of_Lagos has recounted an unexpected encounter with Peter Obi during a flight to Owerri, saying he initially had no idea that the person sitting beside him was the former Anambra State governor and former presidential candidate.

According to his account, he first encountered Obi at the airport while the politician was wearing a COVID-19 face mask. The two subsequently boarded the same flight and were seated beside each other in economy class. 

The man said they began chatting about his work in the banking sector and the ownership structure of his employer. He said he only realised who he had been speaking with when Obi removed his mask to drink water.

“I only clocked who it was cause he removed his facemask to drink water.”

He said he was shocked when Obi confirmed his suspicion. 

What happened after they landed?

The man said the flight landed in Owerri, and he subsequently realised that he appeared to be the only person who had not recognised Obi during the journey.

He claimed that some people even mistook him for Obi's aide, apparently because he was travelling in a suit and walking alongside him.

According to his account, Obi continued carrying his own hand luggage and declined to allow the man or anyone else to carry it. He then walked to a Prado vehicle and departed. 

The encounter reportedly left the man impressed, and he said he silently prayed for Obi's safety as the vehicle drove away.
