“Obi Came to Meet Me, I Told Him I Was Staying in Labour Party, But He Said He Was Leaving” — Alex Otti

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has revealed that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi personally met with him before leaving the Labour Party and informed him that he intended to exit the party.

Otti said that during their conversation, he told Obi that he would remain in the Labour Party despite the party's internal challenges.

“He came and met with me, and I told him that for me, I was staying back. But he said he was leaving.”

Otti made the disclosure while speaking with ARISE News anchor Ojy Okpe, where he discussed his continued membership of the Labour Party, Obi's departure and the party's internal crisis.

According to Otti, he had also given Obi his personal assessment of the political direction he was taking, although he acknowledged that Obi was a more senior political figure and could have had information or considerations that Otti did not have.

“You know he’s a more senior person, so there are things he could have seen that I didn’t see.”

Otti further said that some of the developments that followed Obi's departure happened in a way he had anticipated, including Obi's initial political destination and subsequent movement.

However, Otti stressed that it was ultimately Obi's decision to make.

Why Otti Stayed

Explaining his decision to remain in the Labour Party, Otti said he believed the party's problems could be addressed from within.

He compared the situation to remaining in one's home after an attack rather than immediately moving elsewhere.

Otti said:

“You don’t relocate from your house because armed robbers came.”

He argued that the appropriate response was to address the problems rather than abandon the political platform. According to Otti, the process of resolving the Labour Party's internal problems was already underway when Obi decided to leave. 

Otti also said that although Obi believed the party's problems could not be resolved if he remained, he did not claim to possess superior knowledge of the situation.

“He could have seen what I wasn’t seeing... I don’t even have a superiority of knowledge.”

Obi's Political Movement

Peter Obi subsequently left the Labour Party and moved into a different political platform ahead of the 2027 election cycle. Otti, meanwhile, remained with the Labour Party and was subsequently affirmed by the party's leadership as its national leader.

The latest Otti interview therefore provides additional detail about the private conversation preceding Obi's departure, while also showing that the two politicians had different assessments of whether the Labour Party's internal problems could be resolved.

Importantly, Otti did not say that Obi was wrong to leave. Rather, he explained that they reached different conclusions based on their respective understanding of the political situation.
