“Obi Was Governor Before Seriake Dickson, So He’s His Senior — Why Is Dickson Talking?” — Shield

A political commentator identified as Shield has questioned former Bayelsa State Governor Henry Seriake Dickson’s decision to publicly comment on issues surrounding Peter Obi, arguing that Obi served as governor before Dickson and should therefore be regarded as his “senior” in terms of governorship experience.

The comment comes amid renewed political debate following the reported disruption of Peter Obi’s movement during a visit to Benue State, an incident that drew reactions from political figures, including Dickson.

Dickson, who is now the National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and a former governor of Bayelsa State, strongly condemned the incident and called for those responsible to face prosecution. He also argued that state governments have a responsibility to protect political opponents and presidential candidates visiting their states.

According to Dickson, the responsibility of a governor extends beyond party politics. He cited his own experience as Bayelsa governor, recalling that he received political opponents and permitted opposition campaign activities in the state even when they were campaigning against his political interests.

Dickson specifically recalled allowing then-presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari to use the Bayelsa Stadium for campaign activities in 2014 and receiving then-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo when he visited the state to campaign for Dickson's political rival, Timipre Sylva.

He argued that governors must distinguish between their personal political interests and their constitutional responsibilities to protect lives, property and public order.

The controversy has now prompted Shield's response, with the commentator questioning why Dickson is taking such a prominent position in the matter and pointing to the chronology of their governorships.

Peter Obi first became governor of Anambra State in 2006, although his tenure involved periods of removal and reinstatement, and he subsequently served another term. Seriake Dickson became governor of Bayelsa State in February 2012 and remained in office until February 2020. On that basis, Obi entered the ranks of former governors before Dickson did.

However, the description of Obi as Dickson's “senior” is not a formal constitutional designation. It is Shield's interpretation based on their respective timelines as governors. What the dispute is really about

Dickson has maintained that the issue goes beyond party politics. He said that even when a visiting politician is an opponent, a governor remains responsible for ensuring security and allowing lawful political activity.

He also said the reported attack should be investigated beyond the arrests already made, with prosecution where evidence establishes criminal responsibility. 

The incident has attracted reactions from several political figures. Former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom, for example, also condemned the reported blockade of Obi's visit and criticized the Benue State Government, while acknowledging that allegations against officials would require evidence.
