Presidency Breaks Silence on Tinubu’s Health Amid Prolonged Vacation

The Presidency has rejected claims that President Bola Tinubu has remained abroad because of health concerns, insisting that the President is “hale and hearty” and continues to discharge his official responsibilities while on a working vacation.

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, made the clarification on Sunday, September 27, 2026, amid growing questions over Tinubu’s prolonged absence from Nigeria and his failure to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to Onanuga, Tinubu's continued stay in Europe should not be interpreted as a medical absence. He described the President's trip as a working vacation, arguing that modern technology allows the President to perform his duties without being physically present at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

“Nigeria’s President is hale and hearty,” Onanuga said.

The Presidency also pointed to Tinubu's meetings with investors in France as evidence that he has remained engaged with government and economic matters while abroad. Onanuga specifically referenced discussions connected to a proposed $7 billion deep-sea port in Ogun Waterside.

Why Tinubu’s Absence Has Generated Questions

Tinubu departed Nigeria on August 30, 2026, for what was initially announced as a three-week working vacation in Europe. The Presidency subsequently announced an extension of the trip by several days.

His continued absence has attracted questions from opposition politicians, lawyers and other public figures, particularly because he was not present at the UN General Assembly.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), for example, called for greater clarity over the President's status and the constitutional arrangements surrounding his absence.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have also questioned Tinubu's prolonged absence, while legal concerns have been raised over whether presidential powers should have been formally transferred during the extended period abroad.

Presidency Gives Return Timeline

The Presidency says Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria this week and participate in activities surrounding the country's 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1.

The State House had earlier said Tinubu's working vacation was extended by a few days and that he remained in contact with officials in Nigeria while directing affairs from abroad.
