APC Lawmaker Faces Backlash After Claiming Peter Obi Cannot Win 2027 Election

A member of the House of Representatives, Clement Jimbo, is facing apparent resistance from some constituents after he previously declared that Peter Obi would not win the 2027 presidential election and would even lose his own polling unit.

Jimbo represents the Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is seeking re-election in 2027. 

What Happened at the Political Event?

The development occurred on September 24, 2026, during the commissioning of a project in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.

APC chieftain and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Emmanuel Enoidem, appealed to people at the gathering to support Jimbo's return to the House of Representatives in 2027.

However, when Enoidem called for support for the lawmaker, some people in the audience reportedly responded negatively. A video reviewed by Premium Times showed members of the audience waving their hands in apparent disagreement with the appeal. 

Enoidem nevertheless continued his appeal, repeatedly stating that Jimbo should be returned to the House.

Jimbo's Previous Comments About Peter Obi

The reaction has attracted attention because of comments Jimbo made earlier in 2026 concerning Peter Obi's chances in the 2027 presidential election.

In an interview in February, Jimbo said:

“Peter Obi is only making noise. He cannot win any election in Nigeria.”

When specifically asked about Obi's polling unit, the lawmaker went further, saying Obi would not win there and asked observers to “mark” his prediction. 

Jimbo had also criticised Obi for what he described as a lack of constructive opposition and accused him of portraying Nigeria negatively.

Enoidem Explains the Crowd's Reaction

Enoidem later disputed the interpretation that the incident represented broad rejection of Jimbo.

He said those present at the event were primarily APC members, rather than a general gathering of voters.

He also acknowledged that there were disagreements surrounding Jimbo's political future, including complaints about zoning, consultation with constituents and youth empowerment.

According to Enoidem, there was still time to resolve those disagreements before the election.

Jimbo Responds

Jimbo rejected the suggestion that his re-election bid faces significant resistance.

He argued that disagreement at a political gathering is normal in a democratic environment and maintained that his record of constituency projects would help his campaign.

He cited projects including schools, solar-powered boreholes, grants for women, youth empowerment programmes, solar streetlights and bursaries.

Jimbo also acknowledged that voters—not politicians—ultimately determine who wins an election.

“Everyone should support and campaign for the candidate of their choice. On Election Day, vote for your candidate.”

He said he remained confident of returning to the House in 2027.

What the Incident Shows

The episode illustrates the political contest already developing ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections. It also highlights the distinction between party loyalty and voters' individual choices.

While Enoidem argued that APC members are expected to support the party's candidates, he also acknowledged voters' right to choose whom they support.

The reported reaction at the event therefore does not establish how the wider constituency intends to vote in 2027. It was a reaction at one political gathering, while the election outcome will ultimately depend on voters and the eventual results announced by the relevant electoral authorities.
