2027 Election: APC Chairmen Reject Wike’s Coalition, Demand Minister Joins Party

Several state chapters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected the “Rainbow Coalition” being promoted by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ahead of the 2027 general elections, with party leaders calling on him to formally defect to the ruling party if he intends to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.

The development has opened another front in the growing disagreement between Wike and some APC governors and party leaders over how support for Tinubu should be organised in 2027.

APC leaders want Wike to choose a side

Wike remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), although he has publicly backed Tinubu's 2027 re-election bid.

His proposed Rainbow Coalition is intended to bring politicians from different parties together to support Tinubu for president while allowing the participating parties and politicians to pursue their own candidates in governorship and legislative contests.

Some APC leaders, however, argue that this arrangement creates divided political loyalty.

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has been particularly direct, telling Wike to either join the APC or remain with his coalition.

“Be on one side. You can’t be on two sides,” Lawal said.

He added that Wike could not simultaneously support APC at the presidential level while backing candidates from other parties in governorship and legislative elections.

Lawal also said he intended to raise the matter with Tinubu when the President returns to Nigeria.

Different reactions across APC states

The position is not completely uniform across the APC.

Some state chapters have welcomed Wike's support for Tinubu and indicated that they would accept him if he decided to join the party. Others have rejected the Rainbow Coalition and insisted that anyone working for the APC presidential candidate should formally identify with the party.

APC officials in states including Niger and Bauchi have also commented on the controversy.

Bauchi APC spokesman Shehu Dauda said the party does not support divided loyalty, while Niger APC spokesman Musa Sarkin-Kaji acknowledged Wike's relationship with the party but said political association remained a matter of individual choice.

Wike maintains the coalition is not an APC structure.

Wike's camp has rejected the suggestion that the Rainbow Coalition is an attempt to create a parallel APC structure.

Through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike has argued that the coalition is specifically about supporting Tinubu's presidential bid and does not prevent other political parties from contesting governorship and legislative elections.

Wike has also pointed to the G5 experience ahead of the 2023 election, when he and other PDP governors supported Tinubu without leaving the PDP.

Wike steps up Tinubu campaign plans

The dispute comes shortly after Wike announced that he would personally lead Tinubu's campaign structure in both the FCT and Rivers State.

On September 26, Wike said he would soon inaugurate campaign teams in the two areas and claimed that politicians from different platforms were already preparing to support the President. 

The latest disagreement therefore centres not simply on whether Wike supports Tinubu, but on how that support should operate within Nigeria's increasingly competitive 2027 political landscape.

For now, the APC positions reported from different states show disagreement over whether Wike should continue operating from outside the party while supporting its presidential candidate or formally join the APC.
