Umahi: ‘I Killed PDP When I Left — If They’re Still Alive, We’ll Have to Kill Them Again’

Minister of Works David Umahi has reignited the political battle surrounding the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, declaring that he “killed” the party when he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2020.

Umahi made the statement while speaking about the political situation in Ebonyi State and the activities of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s Rainbow Coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

The former Ebonyi State governor said he remained a close friend and brother of Wike, but insisted that there was no Rainbow Coalition structure in Ebonyi State.

“Wike is my good friend and brother, but there is no Rainbow Coalition in Ebonyi State,” Umahi said, according to reports of his remarks. He added that if Wike had a governorship candidate in the state, he had not been informed.

‘I Killed PDP When I Left’

Umahi, who served as Ebonyi governor from 2015 to 2023, left the PDP for the APC in 2020 while still governor.

Reflecting on the PDP's political fortunes in the state, he said:

“I killed the PDP when I left PDP. Whether they are alive again, I don’t know. And if they are alive, we have to unalive them.”

He attributed his opposition to the PDP to what he described as the party’s treatment of the South-East.

According to Umahi, the South-East had consistently supported PDP presidential candidates but, in his view, did not receive corresponding political recognition from the party.

“We supported the PDP, voted for presidents in the PDP and when it was our time for them to honour us, they did not honour us,” he said, expressing confidence in the APC.

Umahi Separates Wike Friendship From Political Interests

Despite his criticism of the PDP and rejection of the Rainbow Coalition's reported political activities in Ebonyi, Umahi maintained that his relationship with Wike remained intact.

He said any candidate backed by Wike would not be allowed to interfere with their personal relationship.

The comments are significant because Wike has emerged as a prominent figure in the political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections. Reports say his Rainbow Coalition supports President Bola Tinubu's re-election while also allowing candidates from other parties to pursue elective positions.

Umahi, however, said the coalition had no presence in Ebonyi, while emphasizing that opposition politicians remained free to campaign in the state.

His warning was that political activities should not descend into violence or inflammatory rhetoric.

“Anybody that wants to campaign, come and campaign. But don’t dish out hate speeches,” he said. “And if you want to fight, we will fight.”

PDP Challenges Umahi’s Claim

Umahi's remarks have also attracted a response from the Ebonyi State PDP.

According to a report by The Scoop Nigeria, the party's state publicity secretary, Prince Darlington Peter Onwe, rejected the suggestion that any individual politician could “kill” an opposition party.

The response reflects the wider political contest over whether the PDP can rebuild its structure in Ebonyi ahead of the 2027 elections.

Umahi's political influence in Ebonyi is closely linked to his 2020 defection. After leaving the PDP for the APC, the political structure associated with him also shifted toward the ruling party. In 2023, Francis Nwifuru, an APC candidate and Umahi ally, won the Ebonyi governorship.

The Bigger 2027 Picture

The dispute goes beyond Umahi and the PDP.

It also highlights growing tensions between Wike's political network and some APC governors as politicians position themselves for the 2027 elections.

Umahi said he had no reason to fear the opposition in Ebonyi and expressed confidence in Governor Francis Nwifuru's political position, as well as President Tinubu's prospects in the state.

He said the APC's objective would be to maximize its votes, even suggesting that winning 95 percent of the vote would be the party's “dream come true.”

At the same time, Umahi's remarks should be understood as a political claim rather than evidence that the PDP has ceased to exist in Ebonyi. The PDP continues to operate as a political party, while the question for 2027 is whether it can rebuild sufficient organisation and electoral support to compete effectively in the state.

Recent reporting has also linked the PDP's political comeback efforts in Ebonyi to its governorship candidate Ifeanyi Odii. Umahi said he was not involved in Odii's political ambition and would not support any arrangement that could undermine Nwifuru's re-election bid.

Why Umahi’s Statement Matters

The “I killed PDP” declaration is particularly notable because Umahi himself was once one of the party's leading figures in the South-East.

His defection in 2020 represented a major political realignment in Ebonyi and helped strengthen the APC's position in the state.

His latest comments therefore underscore the continuing importance of political defections, party structures and alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.

They also reveal a clear division between Umahi's political position and Wike's approach to the PDP.

While Umahi says he has moved decisively away from the PDP and wants the APC to retain political control in Ebonyi, Wike has continued to maintain a relationship with the PDP while serving in President Tinubu's APC-led administration.

For now, Umahi insists that his personal friendship with Wike remains unaffected by their differing political calculations in Ebonyi.

But with the 2027 elections approaching, the question of whether Wike's political network can establish a meaningful presence in the state—and whether the PDP can regain ground—will remain a closely watched issue in Ebonyi politics.
