Rev. Fr. Oluoma Calls Out VDM Over Mockery of Apostle Arome, Demands Public Apology

Catholic priest and social commentator Rev. Fr. Chinenye John Oluoma, popularly known as Fada Oluoma, has criticised social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) over his recent mockery of Apostle Arome Osayi.

Oluoma said there is a clear difference between legitimate criticism and caricature, arguing that VDM could have challenged Arome’s views without mimicking or ridiculing him. 

The controversy followed VDM’s criticism of a viral sermon in which Arome discussed Nigeria’s purported role in Christian revival while contrasting the country’s spiritual focus with the technological development of nations such as China.

While Oluoma acknowledged VDM’s record of advocating for people seeking justice, he said the activist crossed a line by imitating Arome during his response.

“There is a difference between caricature and criticism,” Oluoma said, according to reports, adding that VDM’s mimicry of Arome was “way out of propriety.” 

Oluoma asks VDM to apologise

The priest urged VDM to publicly apologise to Arome if he had not already done so, describing an apology as the “noble and right thing to do.”

Oluoma also invoked the biblical account involving Archangel Michael and the devil, arguing that even in a confrontation with someone regarded as wrong, abusive language and insults were inappropriate. 

His intervention comes as criticism of Arome's comments continues to generate debate online. VDM has defended his position, arguing that his criticism concerns what he considers contradictions between Arome’s message about Nigeria and the preacher’s reported decision to relocate his family to the United States. 

VDM has also faced criticism for comments about Arome’s facial appearance. A resurfaced video subsequently showed Arome discussing a longstanding facial condition and explaining his personal understanding of it. 

Oluoma further argued that Nigeria’s religious identity should not be presented as incompatible with technological and economic advancement. According to him, Nigerians can pursue Christian values while also excelling in science, technology, business, education and other areas necessary for national development.

The dispute has now drawn reactions from multiple religious figures, including Bishop Ibro Zion, who also criticised VDM over his treatment of Arome.
