Bello El-Rufai Thanks Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, Kwankwaso for Supporting Detained Father

Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed appreciation to prominent opposition figures who contacted him over his father’s continued detention.

Bello, who represents Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, named former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso among those who reached out to ask about Nasir El-Rufai’s condition. 

However, Bello singled out Peter Obi for particular appreciation, saying Obi had repeatedly contacted him to check on his father despite their previous political differences.

According to Bello, the gesture was particularly significant because he had previously been critical of Obi.

“I would like to thank them, particularly Mr Peter Obi. He always called me to ask about my dad.”

Bello described Obi’s concern as a personal lesson, noting that political disagreements had previously shaped his view of the former Anambra governor. 

He also disclosed that his father had been using his time in detention to read, study the Quran and reflect on his experiences.

Nasir El-Rufai has remained involved in ongoing legal proceedings since being taken into ICPC custody in February 2026. The ICPC has said his detention was connected to investigations, while El-Rufai has challenged aspects of the proceedings. 

The former governor is also facing a separate case concerning alleged unlawful interception of telephone communications involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. The Federal High Court in Abuja is expected to rule on his no-case submission on October 26, 2026. 

Bello's remarks come amid increasing political attention around El-Rufai's legal situation, with opposition figures including Obi publicly calling for due process in the handling of the former governor's case.
