Judy Austin Faces Crowd Backlash After Court Appearance in ₦1bn Rita Edochie Defamation Suit

Nollywood actress Judy Austin faced a public backlash outside an Abuja court on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, following the latest proceedings in her ₦1 billion defamation lawsuit against veteran actress Rita Edochie.

The two actresses appeared separately at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja as the long-running dispute between them moved into a legal setting.

According to reports, a crowd gathered outside the court premises and taunted Austin as she left. A video circulating online captured members of the crowd shouting, “Husband snatcher, who is taking her in-law to court?”

The comments reflect the wider controversy surrounding Austin's relationship with actor Yul Edochie, as well as the longstanding disagreement between Austin and Rita Edochie.

Why Judy Austin Took Rita Edochie to Court

Austin instituted a defamation action against Rita Edochie, seeking ₦1 billion in damages, alongside a retraction and public apology over statements she considers defamatory.

She also asked the court to restrain Edochie from further publishing the alleged defamatory statements and to order the removal of such content from her online platforms.

Austin also filed a separate action against her former husband, Emmanuel Obasi, with the two cases involving claims exceeding ₦2 billion in total.

Rita Edochie Stands by Her Position

Rita Edochie has maintained that she stands by her previous social-media comments about Austin.

Before the September 29 hearing, Edochie denied reports that she had retracted her statements and said she would address the matter in court.

Following the hearing, Edochie reportedly said her social-media posts were intended to address moral issues and educate people. She also maintained that she authored the posts herself.

The veteran actress has previously challenged Austin over the allegations surrounding her relationship with Yul Edochie. Those claims remain disputed, and the legal proceedings are intended to determine the issues raised in the respective cases rather than social-media commentary.

Court Adjourns Proceedings

The court has adjourned the matter to November 24, 2026, meaning the legal battle is set to continue.

The case against Obasi also involves a jurisdictional challenge raised by his legal team, with proceedings continuing separately from the public reaction to the dispute.
