Lady Receives Fake ₦500,000 Alert From Stranger, Blocks Caller After Money Fails to Reflect

A Nigerian woman has shared her experience after receiving what appeared to be a ₦500,000 bank alert from an unknown person, only to discover that the money had not actually entered her account.

The woman, identified on X as @itzchristunique, said the unexpected alert appeared to show that ₦500,000 had been transferred into her OPay account. Shortly afterwards, an unknown number contacted her by phone.

Stranger Allegedly Asked for a Refund

According to her account, the caller told her that he would provide another bank account to which she could return the money.

She reportedly agreed to the proposed refund arrangement.

However, when she checked her account, she discovered that the supposed ₦500,000 had not reflected in her actual account balance.

Realising that the alert might not represent a genuine transaction, she said she immediately blocked the phone number.

Social Media Users Warn About Fake Bank Alerts

The incident generated reactions from other X users, some of whom claimed that similar schemes have been used to deceive people.

One commenter explained that fraudsters can allegedly use bulk-SMS systems to create messages resembling genuine bank transaction notifications.

Another user said people should not rely solely on SMS alerts when confirming payments and should instead check whether the money has actually reflected in their bank or fintech account.

The episode highlights a common online-safety lesson: a payment notification should not be treated as proof that money has been received until the transaction is confirmed directly in the account.
