“I Slept on My Employer’s Dog Bed” — Nigerian Woman Recounts 9-Year Ordeal as Maid in Egypt

A Nigerian woman has recounted what she described as a difficult nine-year experience working as a domestic worker in Cairo, Egypt, after travelling abroad in search of better economic opportunities.

The woman, who is now in her early 30s, said she travelled to Egypt in 2016 to work as a maid and eventually spent about nine years in the country.

Speaking during an interview with content creator Egungun, she said she worked as a domestic worker for seven years and six months before a serious accident reportedly left her with nothing.

“I Fell From a Nine-Storey Building”

According to the woman, her years of work in Egypt were interrupted by a major accident.

She claimed that after working for more than seven years, she fell from a nine-storey building, an incident she said caused her to lose everything she had worked for.

“I travelled in 2016 to Egypt, Cairo, to do a maid job. I worked for seven and a half years. After working for seven years, I had an accident, which made me lose everything I worked for.”

She said her decision to travel abroad was largely influenced by her family's financial circumstances.

“I didn’t wish to go, but I came from a very poor family background,” she was quoted as saying.

Claims of Poor Working Conditions

The woman also described what she said were difficult conditions faced during her employment.

She alleged that domestic workers' passports were taken from them and retained until certain payments were completed.

She further claimed that she earned about ₦100,000 per month at the time and sometimes had to sleep on the floor or on her employer's dog's bed.

“My salary then was ₦100,000 monthly. Sometimes I sleep on their dog’s bed or on the floor.”

“Over the years, I wasn’t able to talk to my family until I finished settling the payments. After I did, I found out that my mom was sick.”

She alleged that some Nigerian domestic workers who travel to Arab countries can find themselves in situations where their freedom and ability to communicate with family members become restricted.

“When we leave Nigeria to go to Arab countries, we’re already turned to slaves. The experience is crazy.”

She also said her family's financial hardship was a major factor behind her decision to travel despite not initially wanting to leave Nigeria.

Her Story Draws Attention

The woman's account has generated attention because of her claims about working conditions, passport retention, low wages, separation from family and the accident she said ended years of work.

Her experience also highlights some of the risks that prospective migrant domestic workers may encounter when travelling abroad through employment arrangements they may not fully understand.
