Fireboy DML Says Privacy Helps Him Avoid Scandals

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Fireboy DML has explained why he has maintained a relatively controversy-free public image, saying he deliberately keeps his personal life away from public scrutiny.
The singer, whose real name is Adedamola Adefolahan, said people cannot easily misinterpret aspects of his life because he does not reveal much about his relationships, private affairs or personality beyond his music.
“They don’t know me enough to misunderstand me. I don’t give them enough personality or insight into my personal life,” Fireboy said.
‘I Don’t Have Scandals’
Fireboy said he avoids relying on drama, celebrity disputes or promotional stunts to remain relevant in the music industry.
“I don’t have scandals, I don’t relate with other artistes, I don’t sell my music with gimmicks,” he said.
His comments suggest that he sees privacy as both personal protection and a career strategy. By limiting public access to his private life, he reduces the space for speculation, rumours and online controversy.
Rather than using relationships, public feuds or personal drama to build attention, Fireboy said he prefers to let his music and artistic output speak for him.
Music Before Publicity
Fireboy has built a major following through songs including “Jealous,” “Vibration,” “Peru” and “Bandana.”
His international profile rose sharply after the remix of “Peru” featuring British singer Ed Sheeran. The song became one of the biggest records of his career and helped introduce his sound to a wider global audience.
The YBNL Nation artiste has generally kept his romantic life and day-to-day personal affairs outside public conversation, even as celebrity controversies frequently dominate online discussions around Nigerian music.
His position differs from the strategy used by some entertainers who make public relationships, feuds, luxury displays or provocative statements part of their publicity cycle.
Fifth Album, ‘ZUKO!’
Fireboy is preparing to release his fifth studio album, ZUKO!, on October 16, 2026.
The 13-track project follows his 2024 album, Adedamola, and is expected to continue his blend of Afrobeats, R&B, pop and international sounds.music.apple+2
Songs associated with the album rollout include:
- “CLAAT!” featuring Jamaican dancehall artiste Masicka
- “IMALI” with Jazzwrld and Thukuthela
Both tracks have already appeared on major streaming platforms.music.amazon.co+1
A Deliberate Celebrity Strategy
Fireboy’s remarks show that his low-profile approach is intentional rather than accidental.
For him, withholding details about his personal life limits public assumptions and keeps attention on his work. His strategy can be summarised simply: give audiences the music, but not unrestricted access to the private person behind it.
Bottom Line
Fireboy DML says he has avoided scandals because he does not give the public enough personal information to misread or turn into controversy.
As he prepares to release ZUKO! on October 16, the singer appears determined to keep building his career through music rather than public drama.
