Mayorkun Says DNA Test Will Be Required Before He Accepts Future Child

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Mayorkun has said he intends to conduct a DNA test before accepting any future child as his biological child.
The singer, whose real name is Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, made the comments during an episode of the In My Opinion podcast, where he discussed relationships, marriage, trust, paternity and his plans for fatherhood.
“I told my girlfriend we’d have to do a prenup and DNA test when she gives me a child, just to be sure. She got upset,” Mayorkun said.
DNA Test and Prenup
Mayorkun said he sees both DNA testing and a prenuptial agreement as non-negotiable precautions before marriage and fatherhood.
According to him, his position is about gaining what he described as “peace of mind,” rather than accusing a partner of infidelity.
He said he has already discussed the conditions with his current girlfriend, although he acknowledged that she did not react positively to the idea.
The singer also recalled raising the DNA-test issue with a former partner and said it was a difficult conversation.
“I hope you will not take it as maybe I don't trust. I would just like to have that peace of mind,” he reportedly said.
‘I Have Thought of Doing It Without Telling Her’
Mayorkun added that he had considered conducting a paternity test privately after the birth of a child.
“I have thought of doing the DNA test without telling her. If it is my child, no issues. If not, everybody will hear about it.”
The comment has generated reactions online, particularly because some people see a secret test as a personal precaution while others see it as a sign that trust has already broken down in a relationship.
Mayorkun’s remarks relate to his stated future plans. They do not indicate that he currently has a child or is involved in an active paternity dispute.
Debate Over Paternity Tests
The singer’s comments have added to a continuing public conversation in Nigeria about DNA testing, trust and responsibility in relationships.
| Viewpoint | Main argument |
| Supporters of routine DNA testing | It provides certainty about biological paternity and may prevent future disputes |
| Critics of routine testing | Requesting it without specific cause can be interpreted as an accusation of infidelity |
| Mayorkun’s position | He considers it a precaution necessary for his personal peace of mind |
There is no universal rule for couples. Whether to test, when to test and how to discuss it are personal decisions that can have significant emotional consequences.
Mayorkun’s Personal Position
Mayorkun said even deep love would not change his position. He referred to stories of men who allegedly discovered years later that children they had raised were not biologically theirs, saying early testing would remove uncertainty.
His comments were part of a broader podcast discussion about modern relationships, monogamy, marriage, friendship breakups and trust. The podcast describes itself as an “edutainment” programme built around open conversations on social issues.
Bottom Line
Mayorkun has made his stance clear: he says any future child will undergo a DNA test before he accepts paternity, and he also plans to sign a prenuptial agreement before marriage.
The position is his personal approach to fatherhood and relationships. It has reignited debate over whether DNA testing should be viewed as routine protection, a matter of transparency or a sign of distrust between partners.
