Wike Says Tinubu’s Re-Election Is His Daily Focus

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike says President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election has become a personal political priority, declaring that he thinks about securing a second term for the president “when eating” and “when sleeping.”
Wike made the remarks during separate town hall meetings with the Rumueme and Apara kingdoms in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he urged residents to support Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
“Each day I sleep, I am thinking about the president’s re-election. When I am eating, I think about the president’s re-election. Everything I am doing now is about the president’s re-election,” Wike said.
Wike Urges Rivers to Back Tinubu
The former Rivers State governor told residents to set political sentiments aside and support Tinubu based on what he described as the administration’s recognition of Rivers State.
He cited federal projects and appointments given to Rivers indigenes as reasons voters should support the president’s second-term bid.
“Let us forget sentiment and vote for the person who has recognised the people of Rivers State with dividends of democracy and with several appointments,” Wike said.
His argument forms a key part of his Rivers mobilisation strategy: that the state should reward Tinubu politically for federal attention, development projects and appointments.
‘2027 Will Be Easier Than 2023’
Wike also predicted that Tinubu’s re-election would be easier than the president’s 2023 victory.
“I know the re-election of Tinubu in 2027 will be easier than that of 2023. We should appreciate Tinubu and ensure massive votes for him. We can do it,” he said.
This is a political prediction, not an established outcome. The eventual result will depend on candidate strength, voter turnout, economic conditions, insecurity, party organisation, regional voting patterns and whether opposition parties remain divided.
Why Wike’s Role Matters
Wike is not merely endorsing Tinubu as a federal cabinet minister. He is trying to convert his political influence in Rivers State into grassroots support for the president.
His position is unusual because he remains associated with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, while serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in an APC-led administration and campaigning openly for Tinubu’s re-election.
| Factor | Political significance |
| Wike’s position | FCT Minister and former Rivers governor |
| His current strategy | Mobilise Rivers voters for Tinubu |
| Main campaign argument | Rivers has benefited from federal appointments and projects |
| His prediction | Tinubu’s 2027 victory will be easier than in 2023 |
| Major test | Whether voters prioritise government projects or wider economic concerns |
Opposition Will Challenge the Argument
Wike’s case for Tinubu is likely to be contested by opposition figures and supporters, who may argue that federal appointments and state-specific projects should not be the sole basis for judging a president.
The broader 2027 debate is likely to focus on issues that affect households nationally, including:
- Food and transport costs
- Fuel prices
- Inflation and purchasing power
- Employment and business conditions
- Security
- Healthcare and education
- Infrastructure and public accountability
This means Wike’s Rivers campaign will compete with opposition arguments that voters should judge Tinubu primarily on their overall experience of the economy and public services.
Bottom Line
Wike has publicly made Tinubu’s 2027 re-election a central part of his political agenda, promising to mobilise Rivers State behind the president.
His assertion that the race will be easier than 2023 reflects confidence in Tinubu’s prospects and in his own political influence. Whether Rivers voters—and Nigerians more broadly—share that confidence will be determined at the polls.
