Kelly Clarkson’s Viral Brooklyn Store Dispute Takes New Turn After Security Footage Emerges

Newly released security-camera footage has added another dimension to the public dispute between American singer and television host Kelly Clarkson and Art of Play, a novelty shop in Brooklyn, New York, after Clarkson accused the store of treating her dismissively during a shopping visit.

The silent video, released by journalist and podcast host Pablo Torre on October 13, shows Clarkson browsing the shop, examining merchandise and briefly interacting with an employee before leaving. The footage lasts approximately four minutes and 50 seconds, but contains no audio, meaning it does not establish exactly what was said during the exchange.

The controversy has attracted widespread online attention because Clarkson publicly described feeling judged by the shop's staff, while the business has disputed her account of the encounter.

What the security footage shows

According to reports by The Hollywood Reporter and PEOPLE, the footage shows Clarkson looking at items inside the store, including what appears to be a kaleidoscope, before approaching an employee about a mechanical bird sculpture known as Molly.

After a brief interaction, Clarkson is seen moving around the shop and later gesturing toward the store owner before heading outside. She appears frustrated in part of the footage, but because the recording has no sound, viewers cannot independently establish the words exchanged or the reasons behind her reaction.

The footage has therefore become a new focal point in a dispute that began with competing accounts of a short shopping visit.

How the disagreement started

Clarkson made the incident public in a social media post on October 10, saying she had driven to Brooklyn to visit Art of Play because she liked the shop and had several items in mind to purchase.

She alleged that staff treated her as though she could not afford an item she wanted and offered to find something comparable instead. Clarkson compared her experience to a scene from the 1990 film Pretty Woman, in which Julia Roberts' character is dismissed by sales staff at a luxury shop.

Her post prompted a wave of online discussion, with people debating customer service, assumptions about wealth and whether celebrities should receive different treatment from other shoppers.

The mystery surrounding the $15,000 mechanical bird

At the center of the disagreement is Molly, a mechanical bird automaton that reportedly serves as part of the shop's in-store magic performances.

Art of Play co-owner Adam Rubin said the bird was mounted to the wall and was not ordinarily for sale in the way customers might expect. He explained that the shop could contact its creator about obtaining a similar automaton for a serious buyer.

Clarkson subsequently shared an image of a $15,000 price tag associated with the bird, appearing to challenge the suggestion that it was unavailable for purchase.

Following the attention generated by the dispute, the store announced that it had raised the bird's advertised price to $15 million. The owner presented the move as a response to the surge in interest, rather than a conventional retail price change.

The conflicting accounts leave an important distinction: whether an item has a price attached to it does not necessarily mean the displayed object itself is immediately available for sale. The footage alone does not resolve what was communicated about Molly during the visit.

Store owner says the backlash has gone too far

Rubin told Business Insider that Clarkson's post brought intense attention to the small business, which he likened to being hit by a “Molotov cocktail.”

He said the shop received online abuse and threats following the singer's criticism. He also described receiving support from regular customers and other people who visited the store after the controversy became public.

Rubin maintained that Clarkson was treated like any other customer and said he would welcome her back. Clarkson's representatives had not responded to a request for comment from Business Insider at the time of that report.

The reported threats and harassment are a reminder that online disputes can have consequences for people and businesses beyond the original disagreement.

Why the story has attracted so much attention

The incident touches on several familiar issues in celebrity culture and consumer relations:

  • Customer service: What should a customer expect when asking about an expensive or unusual item?
  • Celebrity influence: How quickly can a public figure's complaint affect a small business?
  • Online accountability: Should businesses and customers take disputes public before attempting to resolve them privately?
  • Evidence and interpretation: How much can silent footage reveal about a conversation when the audio and surrounding context are missing?

The release of security footage adds visual evidence about the visit, but it does not settle every disputed detail. Neither the celebrity's initial account nor the store's response should automatically be treated as a complete record of what happened.

Note:

The Kelly Clarkson Art of Play dispute has evolved from a complaint about customer service into a wider debate about celebrity influence, business reputation and the power of social media.

The security footage provides a view of Clarkson's brief visit, but it has no audio and cannot independently prove what either party said. The disagreement over the mechanical bird's availability and price also remains central to the competing accounts.

The episode offers a lesson for both customers and businesses: public complaints can bring attention and accountability, but they can also trigger disproportionate backlash before all the facts are clear. A fair assessment requires distinguishing what the footage shows from what the people involved say happened.
