TRAVEL & IMMIGRATION

Nigerian passport holders considering travel to Asia have several options that may allow them to avoid obtaining a conventional visa from an embassy before departure. A report by Vanguard identifies the Maldives, Lebanon, Timor-Leste and Cambodia as destinations to consider. However, their entry rules differ, and Cambodia's eligibility rules for Nigerian ordinary passport holders require further confirmation.

The Maldives is known for its islands, beaches, coral reefs and resort tourism. Nigerian tourists can generally obtain a visa on arrival without prior visa approval.

Before travelling, visitors should prepare:

  • A valid machine-readable passport.
  • Confirmed return or onward travel.
  • Confirmed accommodation at a registered property or evidence of sufficient funds.
  • The required electronic traveler declaration, submitted within the applicable timeframe.

The Maldives' official guidance states that meeting the documentary requirements does not automatically guarantee admission; immigration officers make the final decision at the port of entry.

2. Lebanon

Lebanon offers Mediterranean coastal scenery, historical sites and a distinctive food culture. According to the Lebanese Consulate General in Lagos, Nigerian passport holders are eligible for a free visa on arrival at Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport, generally valid for one month and potentially extendable under the applicable rules.

The consulate lists conditions that include:

  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay.
  • A return flight reservation.
  • Proof of accommodation.
  • Travel insurance meeting the consulate's stated coverage requirements.
  • No Israeli stamps or visas in the passport.

Travelers should confirm the full requirements before departure. They should also review current security advisories, given the potential for conditions in Lebanon and the wider region to change.

3. Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste, also called East Timor, is a Southeast Asian country known for its coastal scenery, diving locations and mountain landscapes.

Official tourism material describes a visa-on-arrival option for many visitors, with a published tourist visa fee of US$30. Requirements can include a valid passport, accommodation details, sufficient funds and a return or onward ticket.

Nigerian travelers should verify that the visa-on-arrival arrangement applies to their specific passport and intended entry point, particularly if entering by land rather than through an international airport or seaport.

4. Cambodia

Cambodia attracts visitors to Angkor Wat, historic temples, cultural sites and Phnom Penh. Its official e-visa system provides an online tourist visa option, with a published fee of US$30 and a stated processing time of three business days.

However, the available evidence does not conclusively establish that Nigerian ordinary passport holders can currently obtain a visa on arrival. Nigerians should not assume they can board a flight without prior authorisation until Cambodian immigration authorities or the relevant embassy confirm their eligibility.

At a glance

DestinationEntry arrangement reportedKey caution
Maldives Tourist visa on arrivalAccommodation, funds and travel documents required
Lebanon Free visa on arrivalPassport restrictions and supporting documents apply
Timor-Leste Visa on arrival, generally US$30Confirm eligibility and permitted entry point
Cambodia Uncertain for Nigerian ordinary passportsVerify before booking; prior e-visa may be necessary

The distinction matters: visa-free entry, visa on arrival and an electronic visa are different arrangements. A visa on arrival may still involve fees and border checks, while an e-visa requires approval before travel.

Note:

These destinations may offer Nigerian travelers alternatives to the traditional embassy-visa process, but none should be treated as an unconditional entry guarantee. Before paying for flights or accommodation, travelers should confirm the latest rules with official immigration authorities and their airline.
