Talarico Accuses Elon Musk of Trying to Buy Texas Senate Seat as Political Spending Intensifies

UNITED STATES • POLITICS • OCTOBER 22, 2026
Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has accused billionaire Elon Musk of using his enormous financial resources to influence the state’s Senate race, escalating a public confrontation between the politician and the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive.
The dispute intensified after Musk criticized Talarico in a post on X, saying there was “something deeply wrong” with the Democratic candidate. Talarico responded by questioning a political system that, in his view, allows an exceptionally wealthy individual to exert disproportionate influence over elections.
The exchange comes as Texas prepares for the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, with Talarico facing Republican candidate Ken Paxton in a closely watched contest for a seat in the US Senate.
$158 million donation puts Musk at the center of the dispute
At the heart of the confrontation is Musk’s reported $158 million contribution to the Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican-aligned super political action committee (super PAC). Campaign-finance filings show that the group subsequently transferred the money to Texas PAC, which supports Paxton’s Senate campaign.
The financial backing has become a central issue in the contest, which has attracted more than $500 million in combined advertising spending, according to Forbes. The scale of expenditure has intensified scrutiny of the role wealthy donors and outside political organizations play in American elections.
Talarico has also argued that campaign advertisements attacking him are likely connected to Musk-funded political efforts. His statements reflect his campaign’s criticism of the influence of large political donations; they should not be taken as proof that Musk personally funded every advertisement or message targeting him.
Musk's political allies defend Republican spending
The dispute comes amid broader Republican efforts to retain control of the US Senate in the November midterm elections.
A spokesperson for Musk’s America PAC has defended Republican political spending, arguing that it helps the party communicate its message and compete in key races. The spokesperson warned that Democratic victories could lead to policies the organization opposes, including what it described as a more “socialist, woke and borderless” country.
Paxton, meanwhile, has faced criticism from Talarico over his record as Texas attorney general, including his 2023 impeachment by the state House and subsequent acquittal by the state Senate. Paxton and his Republican allies have portrayed Talarico as too liberal for Texas voters.
Why the Texas Senate race matters
The contest has become a significant political battleground because its outcome could affect the balance of power in Washington.
For Talarico, the dispute over Musk’s spending offers an opportunity to make campaign financing, economic fairness and the influence of billionaires central themes of his campaign. For Republicans, large donations from outside groups provide resources for advertising and voter mobilization as they seek to retain the seat.
However, political spending alone does not establish how voters will decide the election. The impact of the advertising, the candidates’ policy positions, voter turnout and other campaign issues will become clearer as the November 3 election approaches.
Note:
The confrontation between James Talarico and Elon Musk highlights a wider debate over the relationship between private wealth and democratic representation in the United States.
Musks reported $158 million contribution to a Republican-aligned political fund is documented in campaign-finance reporting. Talarico’s assertion that Musk is trying to buy a Senate seat is a political accusation, not an established finding that the election or its outcome has been purchased.
The central question for voters is how much influence large donors and outside political organizations should have in shaping campaigns, public debate and electoral competition.
