Powerful 7.0-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Tibet, Killing 16

At least 16 people have been killed and dozens injured after a powerful magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck Tibet in southwestern China, triggering emergency rescue operations and destroying hundreds of homes.
The earthquake struck at approximately 10:33 p.m. local time on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in Baqên County, within the Nagqu region of Tibet, according to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, as reported by international media.
The affected area is located approximately 400 kilometers northeast of Lhasa, the regional capital.
Dozens Injured as Homes Collapse
Initial reports from Chinese authorities confirmed that at least 16 people had died and 32 others were injured. Eleven of the injured were reported to be in serious condition, while 21 sustained minor injuries.
The earthquake also caused extensive damage to residential buildings, with at least 339 homes reported to have collapsed. Power outages and rockfalls further complicated conditions in affected communities.
Rescue teams have been deployed to search damaged buildings, assist injured residents and assess the full extent of the destruction.
Difficult Conditions Complicate Rescue Efforts
The earthquake struck a mountainous, high-altitude region where difficult terrain can hinder emergency response operations.
Rockfalls have forced road closures in parts of the affected area, making access to some communities more challenging. Communications disruptions and continuing aftershocks have added to the difficulties facing residents and rescue personnel.
Authorities have mobilized emergency responders and supplies as efforts continue to reach affected communities and provide assistance to displaced families.
A Region Vulnerable to Earthquakes
Tibet and neighboring areas of western China are vulnerable to seismic activity because of the geological forces associated with the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
The latest disaster comes after previous deadly earthquakes in the wider region, including a magnitude-6.8 earthquake in Tibet in January 2025 that killed more than 120 people.
Rescue Operations Continue
Authorities are continuing to assess the damage and coordinate emergency assistance. The number of casualties and the scale of destruction could change as rescue teams reach more affected areas.
The latest earthquake highlights the dangers posed by powerful seismic events in remote mountainous communities, where damaged infrastructure and difficult access can delay rescue efforts.
