Army Seeks Stronger Ties with Taraba Universities to Promote Peace and Development

News report | Nigeria | October 25, 2026

The Nigerian Army has called for stronger collaboration with universities in Taraba State to improve campus security, promote peaceful coexistence and support community development.

The call was made by Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, Commander of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, during familiarization visits to Kwararafa University and the Federal University Wukari.

Army Highlights Importance of Military-Academic Cooperation

Akaliro said sustained engagement between the Army and educational institutions could strengthen mutual understanding and help address security concerns affecting universities and surrounding communities.

He reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to supporting the institutions on security-related matters and promoting an environment where students and staff can pursue academic activities safely.

The commander’s visits formed part of his familiarization tour following his assumption of command in Wukari. He also noted that the relocation of the 6 Brigade headquarters from Jalingo to Wukari created an opportunity to build stronger relationships with institutions and other stakeholders in the area.

University Managements Pledge Cooperation

The Vice-Chancellor of Kwararafa University, Professor Shishi Zheme, and the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Wukari, Professor Benjamin Kefas Ate, received the commander during his separate visits.

Both university leaders commended the Nigerian Army for its contributions to security and peace and pledged continued cooperation with the Brigade in promoting peaceful coexistence and community development.

Why the Partnership Matters

The engagement highlights the role that cooperation between security agencies, universities and local communities can play in addressing security concerns around educational institutions.

For Taraba State, sustained collaboration could support safer learning environments, strengthen communication between university authorities and security personnel, and contribute to broader peace building efforts.

However, the long-term impact will depend on how such cooperation translates into practical security arrangements, effective communication and sustained engagement with surrounding communities.

Note: The Nigerian Army is seeking closer ties with Taraba’s universities as part of efforts to strengthen campus security, peaceful coexistence and community development. The key measure of success will be whether the engagement produces lasting, practical benefits for students, staff and residents.
