Arsenal stunned by Fleetwood as Arteta laments “a very sad day”

Fleetwood Town created one of the biggest shocks in English League Cup history by defeating Premier League champions Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Manager Mikel Arteta said it was "very disappointing" to be knocked out in the fourth round.

Costly missed chances

After a strong first half performance from Fleetwood, who are 84 positions below Arsenal in the English football pyramid, Aaron Loupalo-Bi put the visitors ahead. However, after the break Viktor Gyokeres scored to level the game. Arsenal were unable to capitalise on their long periods of possession and numerous chances.

The game went to penalties and Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimaraes’ penalty. Conor Haughey scored the winning penalty, as celebrations erupted.

Arteta takes the blame

Manager Arteta rotated his squad with nine changes ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Liverpool. Despite bringing in several experienced internationals, Arsenal were eliminated. However Arteta was quick to point out that it wasn’t due to a lack of effort from his players.

"First of all congratulations to Fleetwood for progressing to the next round. It’s very disappointing for us.

"We had enough ball, enough chances that we shouldn’t have got to penalties. If you want more margin, you have to make sure that you show it. We didn’t do that.

"We have a massive responsibility here to play with our badge. I’m disappointed we lost but it’s not because of a lack of commitment."

Dowman sent off

Arsenal’s Max Dowman was shown a straight red card in the 86th minute for violent conduct. The midfielder appeared to lunge at Harrison Neal. Arteta said he would look into the incident fully but was clearly frustrated with the young player.

Historic night

Fleetwood Town manager Matt Lawlor praised his players for playing with discipline and sticking to their counter attacking gameplan against the country’s best and most organised team. They sat deep and kept Arsenal in tight spaces. When chances did come they capitalised.

"The biggest night in the club’s history in terms of the opposition coming to town. We’ve beaten the champions," Lawlor said.

"It really means a lot for us to make the town proud, to make this club proud and make our supporters proud. It’s the first time we’ve ever been in the quarter finals."
