Bauchi Lawmaker Defects to APC After Alleged APM Candidate Replacement

Politics | October 28, 2026
A serving member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Itas, has defected from the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) to the All-Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Abdullahi, who represents Itas/Gadau Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Petitions, announced his defection during plenary presided over by Deputy Speaker Jamilu Umaru Dahiru on Tuesday, according to Leadership.
The lawmaker reportedly attributed his decision to the alleged replacement of his name as the APM candidate for his constituency ahead of the next election.
He expressed concern that the party’s decision did not adequately reflect the political interests of his constituency, saying the development influenced his decision to leave the party and join the APC.
Despite his departure, Abdullahi acknowledged the working relationship he had enjoyed with fellow lawmakers and expressed appreciation to the APM for providing him with a platform to serve.
Political Implications Ahead of 2027
The defection comes amid wider political manoeuvring in Bauchi State as parties prepare for the 2027 general elections.
The APM and APC have both featured in recent political developments in the state, including disputes and disagreements over party structures and candidate selection. The reported defection adds another dimension to the evolving political landscape.
However, the allegation concerning the replacement of Abdullahi’s candidacy remains attributed to the lawmaker, and further clarification from the APM would help establish the circumstances surrounding the reported decision.
Whether the defection will affect political alignments in Itas/Gadau Constituency remains to be seen as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
Note: Candidate selection and party loyalty could remain important issues as political parties position themselves for Nigeria’s 2027 elections. The reactions of party leaders, supporters and constituents will help shape the next phase of political activity in Bauchi State.
