Wike: Why I turned down a Senate seat after two terms as Rivers governor

Minister of Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has explained why he did not seek a seat at the senate after serving two terms as Rivers State Governor.

Why Wike did not seek Senate seat

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony of a pedestrian bridge constructed by Dunamis International Gospel Centre Abuja, Wike said despite many ex-governors seeking to become members of the National Assembly, he decided to stay away from the position. He said the role would have limited his freedom to speak out.

"Many governors today, when they finish their term, they want to go to the National Assembly but I said I will not go. They asked why? I will not have the freedom to say what is on my mind," he said.

"So there is no need for me to go."

Wike on leadership

Speaking further on leadership, Wike, who served as Rivers governor, said he still speaks the truth about the nation at large. He urged political and religious leaders to focus on quality leadership and putting the interest of the common man first.

His comments were made during the commissioning of the pedestrian bridge on Airport Road, Abuja which he described as leadership in action.
