30 States Endorse Constitutional Amendment to Establish State Police — Akpabio

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has said about 30 state Houses Of Assembly have approved the constitutional amendment needed to establish state police, adding that Nigeria will soon transition into a decentralised police system. He spoke during a meeting with members of the Arewa Revival Project, a northern youths group present in all 19 northern states of the country in Abuja.

State Police Getting Approved

Akpabio said the increasing number of approvals were a sign that Nigeria was near having state police, which will make security more community based and help combat local threats.

He added that it will not be to replace security agencies but instead work alongside them, increasing Nigeria’s ability to combat insecurity.

"For the first time in the history of Nigeria, we may not spend a month getting our state police system, our decentralised police system because about 30 states have approved the amendment to our Nigerian Constitution," he stated.

Tinubu Should Be Re-elected

The Senate President has urged northern youths to get ground support for President Bola Tinubu to be re-elected in 2027, saying that he should be re-elected to allow his economic and security reforms to bear fruit.

He went on to add that President Tinubu has started to move Nigeria away from dependence on crude oil revenue with his economic diversification, tax and outdated law reforms. Changing the government before his policies have fully taken effect can cause setbacks, he added.

"You don’t change a winning team. He is doing so well, let his policies really take shape."

He added that the National Assembly have approved Tinubu for a second term, saying that he is performing well.

Don’t Get Drawn Into Social Media

Akpabio urged Nigerian youths to not fall victim to the social media propaganda that is being paid for by those who oppose the administration. He added that there are many people online who are financially motivated to criticise the President and his supporters.

Instead of constantly arguing online, he advised youths to organise regular community events to educate people on government policies.

"You might not have the energy and time but you can organise meetings from time to time for the youth to see the truth," he said.

Group Praises Senate President

During the meeting the Arewa Revival Project praised Akpabio for his leadership of the National Assembly and presented him with an award for his contributions to national development.

"We believe he should be recognised for his contribution to nation building," the coordinator of the project Hon. Mustafa Ibrahim said.
