Just In: Protesters Storm Police Headquarters Over Ekiti Attack, Demand Arrests

Protesters stormed the Force Headquarters in Abuja to demand those responsible for the attack on Human Rights Activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore and his team on October 30 be arrested and prosecuted.
Supporters of Sowore alongside the Take It Back Movement led the protests. Reporters and protesters waited to hear from the Inspector General of Police.
Justice Demanded
Protesters called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure that all those involved in the incident are brought to justice and for an independent investigation to be carried out into the incident. They said it was important for the investigation to look at those who are suspected of sponsoring, funding and coordinating the attack.
Protesters marched to the police headquarters singing unity songs as they demanded justice for Sowore and his associates who were reported to have been attacked at the Tawakalitu Restaurant in Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti.
Growing Controversy
The protest comes as growing controversy has surrounded how the Ekiti State Police Command has handled the incident. They initially stated that Sowore had had a scuffle with some people at a restaurant. However, this has now been denied by Sowore.
Sowore has claimed that he and his team had been the target of an organised attack by armed men. The police have since announced that 11 suspects have been arrested in relation to the incident.
The suspects were arrested from their hideouts at the Atikankan area of Ado-Ekiti. Items were found on them including walkie talkies, mobile phones, ATM cards and international passports.
Not Enough Arrests
Despite being arrested, Sowore has claimed that this is not enough and is demanding that security agencies trace those responsible for organising the attack including those suspected of sponsoring the attack.
He has also demanded that CCTV footage from the restaurant be released so they can see exactly what happened during the attack. He has also claimed that a mobile phone that was stolen from one of his team members was later traced to the Ekiti State Governor’s Lodge. This hasn’t been independently confirmed.
The AAC has also claimed that security agencies have not done anything with the evidence they have and are calling again for an independent investigation into those believed to be involved.
Pressure on Police
The protest on Tuesday is the latest development in the controversy surrounding the incident. Those protesting want to put pressure on the police to show they will carry out a full investigation. The protesters along with Sowore’s supporters want to ensure that they will investigate fully including all those who are suspected of organising and sponsoring the incident.
