2027 ELECTION: CAN INEC GUARANTEE FREE, FAIR AND CREDIBLE POLLS?

Headline: INEC UNDER PRESSURE AS #RIGANDDIE DEBATE RAISES QUESTIONS OVER CREDIBILITY OF 2027 ELECTIONS
November 4, 2026
Questions surrounding the independence, preparedness and credibility of Nigeria's electoral umpire are gaining renewed attention as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
The debate has been brought into focus by Sahara Reporters' November 4 SaharaTV Morning Show, titled '#RigAndDie': Can INEC Deliver Free And Fair Elections In 2027? The programme places electoral credibility and public confidence at the center of the national conversation.

The discussion comes at a critical moment when Nigerians are increasingly demanding stronger institutional safeguards, transparent election procedures and credible mechanisms for protecting their votes.
INEC's preparedness faces public scrutiny
INEC, under its Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, has announced several initiatives aimed at strengthening preparations for the 2027 elections.
The commission has identified logistics, technology, security, personnel training, voter education and stakeholder engagement as key areas requiring attention.
It has also cited the August 2026 Osun governorship election as a benchmark, reporting that 94.5 per cent of polling units opened for accreditation and voting by 8:30 a.m.

However, successful administration of a governorship election does not automatically guarantee similar performance during a nationwide general election involving 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Civil society demands evidence, not assurances
The pressure on INEC is not limited to political commentators.
On October 29, 2026, civil society organizations led by ActionAid Nigeria called on the electoral commission to publish verifiable evidence of its preparations.
Their demands included transparent recruitment and training of election personnel, detailed logistics plans, reliable technology and clear contingency arrangements.
The organizations argued that public confidence must be built through measurable performance and accountability rather than official assurances.

International observers identify potential risks
The International Republican Institute (IRI), in its assessment of Nigeria's 2027 electoral preparations, identified several outstanding concerns.
These include:
- Unresolved questions surrounding electronic transmission of election results.
- Uncertainty over the interpretation and implementation of electoral provisions.
- Public distrust arising from controversies surrounding the 2023 presidential election.
- Potential political interference and concerns about the neutrality of security institutions.
- The need for stronger BVAS and IReV testing, particularly in areas with poor network connectivity.
The institute recommended clearer procedures, transparent communication, stronger technological testing and improved safeguards against electoral malpractice.

The bigger question: Can Nigerians trust the process?
The credibility of the 2027 elections will depend on more than INEC's ability to distribute ballot papers, deploy personnel and announce results.
It will require demonstrable independence, impartiality, transparency and accountability at every stage of the electoral process.
Security agencies must remain politically neutral. Political parties must respect electoral laws. Candidates must discourage violence, while the judiciary must provide timely and impartial resolution of election disputes.
Most importantly, Nigerians must have confidence that their votes will count and that the announced results will genuinely reflect the choices made at the polling units.
Note
The 2027 general elections will be a defining test of Nigeria's democratic institutions.
INEC has an opportunity to rebuild public confidence, demonstrate institutional independence and establish a credible electoral process that can withstand political pressure.
But Nigerians should not have to wait until election day to discover whether the commission is prepared.
The real test begins now.
Credible elections are not established by promises. They are demonstrated through transparency, accountability and the protection of every lawful vote.
