Alternative headline: Federal Government Begins ₦50,000 Relief Payments as OPay Unveils Steps for Beneficiaries

The Federal Government has commenced the disbursement of its ₦50,000 cash-support intervention for selected vulnerable Nigerians, with OPay providing instructions on how eligible customers can check their status and access the funds.

The initiative, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), is designed to provide financial assistance to economically vulnerable households struggling with rising living costs and inflation.

According to the Federal Government, the programme uses approved digital financial service providers to deliver assistance directly to selected beneficiaries through mobile wallets.

OPay is among the participating payment providers, alongside ALAT by Wema Bank, MoMo PSB, NairaGram and Moniepoint.

Who Qualifies for the ₦50,000 Support?

The intervention targets poor and vulnerable households across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.

According to the Federal Government's programme guidelines:

    • Beneficiaries are selected using verified national identity records and the National Social Register.
    • Selection is based on vulnerability and established screening processes.
    • Having an active OPay account does not automatically qualify someone for the payment.
    • Beneficiaries are contacted through approved payment providers.
    • Payments are being made in phases, so not everyone will receive a notification at the same time.

Is the ₦50,000 Payment Free?

Yes. The Federal Government says the support is a grant, not a loan. Beneficiaries are not expected to repay the money or pay registration, processing or activation fees.

The government has also warned Nigerians to be cautious of individuals claiming they can secure access to the programme in exchange for money.

Beneficiaries should never disclose their ATM PIN, one-time password (OTP) or banking passwords to anyone.

For enquiries and complaints, the official NERSI helpline is 0700-022-2222.

What Nigerians Should Understand

The ₦50,000 intervention is intended to provide direct financial relief to households facing economic hardship. However, the programme is not an open grant available to every Nigerian with a bank account or mobile wallet.

The selection process is based on verified records, and access depends on whether an individual has been identified as an eligible beneficiary.

Nigerians are therefore advised to use only official payment channels and government-approved information sources.

Note

The Federal Government's ₦50,000 relief intervention could provide some assistance to vulnerable households struggling with Nigeria's rising cost of living. However, transparency in beneficiary selection, timely disbursement and accountability will be essential to ensuring that the intervention reaches those who need it most.

The real measure of success will not simply be the announcement of financial assistance, but how effectively the money reaches eligible households.
